Some tricky moral dilemmas are presented in this short sequence of lessons on the clash between private interest and public morality. We examine the way that different cultures respond to such moral dilemmas in different ways. Students are motivated to write and share their own dilemmas, and carry out a survey of their peers’ reactions to their own dilemmas, which can form the basis of short poster-style presentations. At the end of the sequence, students participate in a panel discussion, which sets the ‘universalists’ against the ‘particularists’. This is done in the form of a role play.
